Cylindrical Vessel
Alabaster
Egyptian, Early Dynastic period
Dynasties 1-3, ca. 3000 – 2500 B.C.
Height: 20 inches (50.8 cm.)
This tall, columnar vessel is carved from an exceptionally beautiful piece of alabaster. The shape, somewhat pinched or constricted at the middle, with a prominent flaring rim is well known in the Early Dynastic period. However, vessels of this magnificent size are extremely rare and almost never survive in such pristine condition.
